The tested claim
A population is not a workforce.
The Great Pyramid would have needed a workforce that could be sustained while farming, households, and the rest of the state continued to operate. This page follows the people through those demands, including settlement, support work, absences, and replacement over time.
How many workers were actually available?
The model tests a range of population estimates. It starts at 1.6 million, a standard Old Kingdom comparison figure, and also checks a higher 2.0 million case. The slider also shows a 2.5 million edge case, which is outside the model's main Old Kingdom range.

The Giza Workers' Village: Heit el-Ghurab
Heit el-Ghurab, “Wall of the Crow,” is the Giza worker settlement excavated and published by Mark Lehner and AERA. It is claimed to have housed those who worked on the pyramid and their families. The model uses that conventional worker-settlement evidence as the capacity comparison, then tests it against the labor and support population the account requires.
The construction-side workforce counted at the site: hauling, water, rope plant, quarry, shaping/setting, and ramp work.
The model carries the worker-village claim through the support population it creates.
A deliberately high 25,000-person screen for the excavated worker village. A smaller screen does not worsen the result — it lowers the implied village population and leaves the ratio unchanged, because the same capacity sits on both sides of it. The governing relationship is 47,316 rostered workers against the 4,200 effective pool: 11.27×. The published calculation gives a population figure of 533,234 when it includes the workforce over time and the people supporting it. Methods Ruling MR-21 records a revised calculation giving 403,746. It also changes the settlement comparison from 11.27 times to 8.35 times. These revisions are documented in the ruling; they do not replace the original output cells in the frozen release. Neither calculation reverses the findings.
The worker village has jobs too.
A worker village cannot run on construction workers alone. Every day, other people have to turn supplies into meals, move water, clean waste, care for households, and keep basic order.
Grain still has to be milled, baked, and brewed before it feeds anyone.
Water is needed for drinking, cooking, washing, ration processing, and basic hygiene.
Waste, cleaning, illness, injuries, and simple care do not disappear because the project is busy.
Caregiving, textiles, food processing, and child/youth help are real village work, not spare idle capacity.

The claim is not just a one-day headcount. If the project lasts decades, the labor system has to keep replacing workers while the rest of Egypt still needs men for farming, army service, temples, trade, and administration.
Not a chosen figure: it is the midpoint of the published range, and the model tests the floor and the ceiling separately rather than relying on the midpoint alone.
That is the annual replacement stream needed to keep the claimed project workforce going.
Every year, the project would take about one out of every eight new adult men entering the labor pool.
This is not one draft for one season. It is a new pull from the next generation every year, for one project, before the kingdom would have staffed any of its other work.
Transparency line: a rostered-against-concurrent comparison returns 1.08x (range 0.825x-1.520x). It mixes a count held across the whole build with a single-moment levy, so it is reported for continuity and is not the governing result.
What this test is saying
With the published starting assumptions, the project would have needed 47,342 men available at the same time from a pool of 76,800 not already reserved for farming. That is 61.6% of those men. The model allows one project to take 25%, leaving the rest available for other work.
The problem is not that the project needs more men than exist in that pool. It is that one project would have needed more than three out of every five, while the rest of the state still needed workers.
Families and support workers would not have been idle background population. Meals, water, cleaning, caregiving, textiles, and household work would still have needed to be done. Moving someone into construction would have changed who performed those tasks, not removed them.
"Just count everyone"
Counting the whole population hides the filter. Children, elderly people, farm labor, household labor, and other state duties cannot all become pyramid labor at the same time.
"Use women and children"
That can be tested only by naming which jobs change and pricing the household, caregiving, textile, milling, brewing, food-processing, water, supervision, and replacement work they leave behind.
"Use soldiers or guards"
Soldiers come from the same prime-age cohort. Moving a man from army to construction changes the label, not the demographic draw.
