One thing to know before the numbers start
The project totals on this page are the current integrated M3 burden. Open required functions can add demand. A proposed alternative may reduce an existing burden only after the replacement function is defined, dimensioned, and resource-loaded through the connected system.
The records below show which workers are already included in the total. Other tests ask how much material would have been needed or whether a proposed method could have worked. Showing those tests separately does not mean their workers were left out. Nor does it count the same people twice.

Two ways to count the same project.
The same project, the same kingdom, the same year — counted twice. The project-dedicated population footprint is 33.33% of the 1.6 million anchor; the concurrent non-farm male labor requirement is 61.6%. Neither is wrong arithmetic. They are answers to different questions, and only one of them is the question that governs closure.
The governing value is NationalClosure_41!B13 = 0.6164306641, the concurrent share. Earlier comparison: dividing all the men recruited over time by the men available at one time gives approximately 70.4%, retained at NationalClosure_41!B43 = 0.7044921875. Those numbers describe different periods. The current test uses the men needed at the same time, giving 61.6%. The earlier comparison remains in the history so readers can follow the change.

The third band is the second band's pale segment redrawn at 20.8× the width, which is the ratio 1,600,000 ÷ 76,800 and is stated on the drawing. Band heights and spacing are drawn.

Everyone the project commits — 533,234NationalClosure_41!B6Live people including families — set against every living soul in Egypt. It counts infants, the old and the women of the kingdom as though any of them could be put on a sledge rope.
533,234 is the published cumulative-roster basis, which counts every worker who was ever rostered, replacements included. The corrected-basis derivative recorded in Methods Ruling MR-21 lowers it to 403,746, and the settlement overshoot from 11.27× to 8.35×. Those values are recorded in the ruling rather than in live output cells, because re-basing the model would rebuild 727 formula cells to change no conclusion: national closure still exceeds the ceiling, demographic closure still does not close, and village sufficiency stays within ratio on either basis.

Why the smaller denominator is the honest one
A man growing the grain that feeds the kingdom is not idle. He is already working, and what he is working on is the thing that keeps everyone else alive. He cannot be moved onto a haul rope without someone else growing his crop.
So the question is not "what fraction of Egypt is this?" It is "of the men who could pull, and who are not already needed in the fields, what fraction does one construction program take?" The workbook's note at NationalClosure_41!E13 calls that "the honest denominator and the honest numerator", and lists what the remainder still has to fund: the army, trade, administration, the temples, and every other building project in the kingdom.
The narrowing is three steps, and each one is a chosen value taken in the conventional account's favor: 24%Inputs_03!B184Assumption of the kingdom are working-age fit men — the note says "taken high" — and 80%Inputs_03!B185Assumption of labor must farm, which the note says is "taken low — generous". Both choices make the pool larger than a stricter reading would.
The number the model threw away
There is a third way to count, and it is worse for the conventional account than either figure above. Take all 100,455NationalClosure_41!B7Live committed working men, farmers included, against the same non-farm pool, and the answer is 130.8%NationalClosure_41!B15Derived — more than the entire pool.
The model does not report that number. A ruling of 9 July 2026, recorded at NationalClosure_41!E8, takes the project's own farmers out of the labor test on the grounds that their burden is already counted on the food side, and that counting them twice would be double jeopardy. The reported figure is the smaller one.
That is the model removing its own strongest number. 61.6% is what survives after it does.
A note on what "committed working men" means. The count is not the number of men on site on a given morning. It is the number the project must hold to keep that morning staffed — allowing for rest days, festivals, sickness, and the men who must replace those who die during a build longer than a worker's median span. The workbook derives that multiplier at Model_04!B114.

It is a chosen threshold with a stated argument, not a measured limit, and the page never calls it one.

The next screen puts that grid in your hands. The red verdict is not printed alone because on its own it would be a single arithmetic result; what makes it worth reading is that it survives the grid.
What is still open underneath this
The denominator of this comparison rests on an assumption with no single source pinned to it. SourceRegister_01 row 83, SRC-MALE-COHORT: status OPEN ITEM, confidence Medium, "requires citation hardening". The population anchor behind it is Butzer's, and Butzer's own table is labeled hypothetical by Butzer. Both are recorded in the Sources panel below, and both were taken at the end that helps the conventional account.
A second closure, kept separate. The workbook runs an independent test at DemographicClosure_46: the project's standing commitment of 47,342B11Derived men against the 50,000B29Sourced of the Weni levy — the largest mobilization the Old Kingdom ever recorded, raised and disbanded five times. Weni levied once, so the comparison the verdict fires on is the concurrent one: the men standing at any one moment, 0.947×B32Derived that levy, held continuously for twenty years. On the rostered basis, which counts everyone who passed through the books across the build, it comes to 1.082×B33Derived — retained as a transparency line, and no longer what triggers the verdict (ruling MR-09). Its verdict at B38 also reads DOES NOT CLOSE. It is a different test, so it is not printed in red here; it is named on screen 5 where it answers an objection.

Push the male share to 30% and the farm share down to 65% — the most generous corner anyone defends — and one project still takes 28.2% of every non-farm working man in Egypt, against a 25% ceiling. That is the bottom-right cell, ClosureSensitivity_45!F14.
More workers can change this result. What about the rest?
The model allows one project to take 25% of the men available after farming is accounted for. At a population of 1.6 million, none of the thirty combinations shown here gets below that limit. Two do at 2.0 million, and eight do at 2.5 million. Passing this labor test does not make the rest of the construction plan work.

The workbook labels the 2.5-million block "implausibly high, NK-era" at ClosureSensitivity_45!A25 and says in its conclusion at A39 that these are populations "no one claims for the reign of Khufu" — the New Kingdom, more than a thousand years later.
Even there, the most generous cell in the entire grid is 18.0%ClosureSensitivity_45!B35Derived, described in its own note as "beyond any defensible OK value" — and still one working man in five, in the whole non-farm economy of Egypt, for one building. Set the population lever to 2,500,000 and look at it.
A green cell means one combination falls under one ceiling. It has never meant the project closes. The food burden, the village, the timber, the ramp and the granite are all still standing behind it, and several of those are reported as separate tests rather than as additional labor in this total.
Why the grid is the finding, not the 1.0 line
At a population of 1.6 million, the project would need between 28.18%ClosureSensitivity_45!F14Derived and 98.63%ClosureSensitivity_45!B9Derived of the men available after farming is accounted for, depending on the assumptions selected. Every combination exceeds the model's 25% limit for one project.
The workbook says so itself, in the sheet's own header at ClosureSensitivity_45!A2: "The finding is not the 1.0 line — it is that ONE project takes an implausible share of the entire non-farm workforce in EVERY cell."
That is the shape of this whole page. Any single escape can be argued. What has to be argued is all of them at once, and the grid is what that argument looks like when it is drawn out.

Each answer moves one thing.
These are the five replies the model has been given most often, in the words its own objections sheet records them in. None of them is silly and none is refused here. Each one is read for what it moves and what it leaves standing.
“They had more workers.”
What it movesThe denominator, directly. A larger kingdom or a wider working-age band widens the pool, and the share falls.
What it leavesThe grid on the previous screen is exactly this answer, run to its limits in three directions at once. At the sourced 1.6 million anchor no combination brings the share under the 25% benchmark — zero cells, with the most favorable corner still at 28.2%. That anchor is what the automated check at QAChecks_08!B121 governs, and it reads PASS. The page starts with a population of 1.6 million, then tests 2.0 million and 2.5 million. Two cells fall under the benchmark at 2.0 million and eight at 2.5 million, and the automated test does not govern those. More people can improve the workforce calculation. They do not, by themselves, supply the timber, produce the copper, or get an 80-tonne beam safely onto a vessel.

“They imported foreign labor.”
What it movesOnly the draw on the pool. The workbook built the lever for this objection and left it at 0Inputs_03!B191Assumption, noting that the default is 0 because the conventional account itself claims an Egyptian workforce. Move it and the Test 1 numerator falls in proportion.
What it leavesEverything else. The recorded rule at NationalClosure_41!B33Policy is that food, water, housing and the population burden are nationality-invariant: every imported worker eats, drinks and is housed inside the same loops. The same note records that the documented case — Weni's auxiliaries — was episodic, never held for decades. And a state cannot breed its way out either: a child born in year one enters the workforce in year sixteen of a twenty-year build.

“The inundation freed the farmers for three months.”
What it movesSeasonal availability, and it moves it a great deal. For three or four months a year the fields are under water and the farm labor is genuinely idle. This is the strongest version of the reply, and the workbook records it in full.
What it leavesThe arithmetic of the calendar. The ruling at NationalClosure_41!B28Policy states it: a cadence of 205.7 blocks a dayModelAnchors_36!B15Live runs all year for twenty years, so seasonal labor must either triple the flood-season cadence — which the density of men on the work front forbids — or triple the timeline, which the conventional account's own twenty years forbids. The ceiling is annual, not seasonal.

“Rotation solves it.”
What it movesWho is standing on the plateau in any given month. Rotation is a real improvement in how a workforce is staffed, and the workbook grants that it is.
What it leavesThe material demand and the committed production. The response at Objections_10 B17 is that rotation "does not eliminate material demand or the project-dedicated production burden". The grain still has to be grown, the rope still has to be made, the copper still has to be mined. Rotating which man does it does not reduce how many man-years it takes.

“The army crewed the barges and harbors.”
What it movesWhich arm of the state supplies the men — and it is a real answer to the question of where trained crews come from.
What it leavesThe pool. The reply at Objections_10 B21 is blunt: soldiers are drawn from the same 384,000NationalClosure_41!B10Derived man cohort, and the test counts bodies regardless of which department supplies them. It adds that an army on crew duty for a twenty-to-thirty-year construction corridor is not garrisoning borders or fielding campaigns.

The shape of the problem
These proposals change different parts of the calculation. More available workers reduce the share taken by the project. Bringing workers from elsewhere reduces the number needed from Egypt. Seasonal work changes when construction could proceed. Rotating crews changes who fills each job.
Each change gets the benefit it actually delivers. But the stone would still have needed to be quarried and moved, the workers fed and supplied, and the materials produced. Those jobs do not disappear when a labor calculation improves.

What this does and does not claim.
What is claimed
On the model's own inputs, one project's non-farm working men come to 61.6431%NationalClosure_41!B13Derived of the men of working age who are not already needed to feed the kingdom, against a single-project ceiling of 25%ClosureSensitivity_45!B5Assumption. The model's verdict on that is DOES NOT CLOSE — MOBILIZATION CEILING EXCEEDED B26. That verdict is the one thing this page prints in red: on screen 3 as the workbook's own string, and on screen 4 on your own readout, wherever you set the levers and the same test still fails. Nothing else on the page is red, and the readout turns green in the only place it can — the four cells that clear, in a population block the workbook calls implausible.
And it is claimed that the verdict is not an artefact of one demographic guess. Across thirty combinations at the anchor population and thirty more at the high case, no cell falls under the ceiling — ClosureSensitivity_45!B36 and the check at QAChecks_08!B121, which is written to fail if one ever does.
What is not claimed
Nothing here says the Great Pyramid was not built, or that no arrangement of Old Kingdom labor could have built it. The page tests one account against one set of figures, and reports where those figures do not meet.
The 25% ceiling is not a measured limit. It is a chosen threshold with an argument attached (ClosureSensitivity_45!G5), and a reader who rejects it should read the grid instead, where the shares stand on their own.
The demographic test at DemographicClosure_46 is a verdict layer only. Its own scope rule at B41Policy states that it adds no burden to the project totals, so nothing on this page counts it twice.
What the displayed result is, and is not
The 61.6% is the current integrated M3 burden. Open required functions can add demand. A proposed alternative may reduce an existing burden only after the replacement function is defined, dimensioned, and resource-loaded through the connected system.
What is still outside it is narrower than it used to be. Direct shaping, fitting, setting, casing and rework labor is integrated as Wave 1; timber labor as Wave 3; ramp labor as Wave 4; the Aswan granite expedition bodies as Wave 5; river and harbor labor as Wave 6. What remains open is sanitation and medical support, processing, fuel and containers, the shaping and setting copper diagnostic, the separately governed timber, rope and copper material findings, the granite shore-transfer and vessel capability gates, administration, security, and night-work support.
Every assumption in the chain was also taken at the end that helps: the population high, the working-age male share high, the farm share low, entry to work at fifteen with a full adult day granted. 61.6% is the current integrated national labor requirement. It is not a final maximum. Any proposed reduction must define and resource-load the mechanism that performs the displaced work.
The findings a demographic rescue cannot reach
Increasing the assumed national population changes the labor denominator. It does not change timber volume, rope production, copper supply, settlement footprint, ground-bearing pressure, vessel movement, or the transfer mechanism required to clear the granite capability gates. Each of these is governed by its own quantities and evidence:
- Settlement capacity. 281,643 implied on-site against a generous 25,000-person screen — 11.3× over.
- Timber throughput and supply. 4,130.5 m³ a year, 82,609.5 m³ over the build; 601.9 literal imported shiploads against the forty-ship record.
- Rope and fiber production. 567.2 t a year including production waste, 17.45 first-rate rigging equivalents, one every 2.98 weeks.
- Copper supply. 7.16× Bir Nasib's long-run annual average; 11.01% of its all-time output in one build.
- Granite ground bearing. 5.33 m² required against a 1.5 m² working footprint.
- Granite loading stability. 0.410 m of deck-edge movement, 4.10× the transfer tolerance; break-even waterplane 3,200 m².
- Granite restraint and refloating. ~24 tonnes-force of restraint; ~218 tonnes of displacement to recover a grounded hull.
Labor and demographic closure are necessary. They are not sufficient. A scenario that improves the labor percentage does not alter any of the above unless it changes the inputs governing them.
Where this page is weakest
Said plainly, because it is the first thing a careful reader will look for.
- The male cohort share has no single source. SRC-MALE-COHORT is an OPEN ITEM at Medium confidence and the register asks for citation hardening. It is a demographic synthesis, not a measurement.
- The population is a hypothesis. Butzer's 1.6 million comes from a table Butzer himself labels hypothetical, and the register carries that caution verbatim.
- Cells do clear above the anchor. Two combinations fall under the ceiling at 2.0 million, and eight do in the 2.5 million block at the widest cohort and thinnest farm share. The workbook calls that population implausibly high and New Kingdom in date, and its automated check governs the sourced 1.6 million anchor only — but those cells are there, and this page shows them rather than cropping the grid.
- The Weni figure is rhetorical. "Many tens of thousands" read at 50,000, from a tomb autobiography two centuries later. Every one of those choices makes the comparator larger and the project look easier.
Scope
This is one test of several the workbook runs. The labor ceiling above is Test 1. Test 2, the agricultural surplus, sits on the same sheet and is not argued here: it finds 14.2%NationalClosure_41!B21Derived of the kingdom inside the project's food chain alone, before any stone is moved. The construction closure tests (M1, M2, M3) are separate again.
This page does not claim that every conceivable arrangement of Old Kingdom labor fails. It shows the demands that any proposed arrangement has to satisfy at the same time, out of the same men.
